This is the text I sent within the invitation to the participants for Extraperlo 2020.
I managed to convince Odd Matter, Attua Aparicio, Fredrik Paulsen, Matylda Krzykowski, Juan Mosqueda and Lex Pott.
1. What is this bloody Spanish talking about?
Extraperlo is an experimental platform that explores an expanded vision of design. Our goal is to challenge the precarious criteria that governs the so-called contemporary design. This will be the 2nd edition where we show – and sell – the work of international authors that have very diverse profiles and whom often do not feel comfortable with just a single definition about their practice.
2. Dude I´m busy, what the hell should I do?
Send to our studio in madrid something that fits within a cardboard box. Scale is important – usually is very easy to impress people with big objects but you have be very sharp to dazzle people with small gestures. Participants are asked to send bold ideas in small boxes. Maximum size: a shoe box.
3. Another curator-ish trying to fool me. What is he going to do with my stuff?
All the works will be for sale during the exhibition. If your piece gets sold you will receive the full amount to refund your investment – we will not take a single € nor the Spanish goverment. This fact provides the name for the project: the term “estraperlo” is used in Spain to refer to the illegal trade of goods subject to some type of tax or rate by the state. The prices can range from 100€ to 500€, you decide. This is an independent initiative and we don’t have any sponsor, if you decide to be part of the show you will need to take care of your transport costs. Usually is less than 50€ from anywhere in Europe. For people outside the EU we will look for alternatives if necessary.
4. I don ́t get this type of jokes. Do he thinks I ́m stupid?
Extraperlo is based on risk. Studies, hypothesis, discarded trials, essays, mistakes, exercises, they are all welcome. Only work-in-progress objects will be shown, we are not interested in work that is already on the catalogue of a company or that you did for another exhibition. We are more interested in what you have on your shelves or even better, in your head.
5. Who else is taking part?
Nelly Ben Hayoun, Jerszy Seymour, Maria Foerlev, Felix Burrichter, Laila Gohar, El Último Grito, Hella Jongerius, Juan Mosqueda, Bethan Laura Wood and Miguel Milá. No, I´m joking, we don´t know yet, will you participate?
6. Will think about it. In case I agree when do I need to send the project?
– Sep 16th: Participants confirmation. If we don ́t hear from you before this day we will understand you are not interested and will invite another person.
– Sep 24th – Oct 3rd: Skype meetings. Discussing what you would like to show and how can we make it happen.
– Nov 18th: Reception of the pieces.
– Nov 25th: Shooting. If we don’t receive your object before this date we will not be able to include it on the show.
– Dec 9th: Official announcement of the participants. Spreading the press release.
7. Mmmm…Should I trust this corrupt?
You can ask previous participants.
