Following its debut at Matter & Shape earlier this year, the Uprooted Rug enters the cc-tapis Special Projects collection as a made-to-order design.

 

Uprooted Rug is a made-to-order rug developed by Jorge Penadés together with cc-tapis as part of Uprooted, an ongoing research project investigating the ecological, cultural and material landscapes shaped by the olive oil industry across the Mediterranean. Through objects, exhibitions and installations, the research examines overlooked resources, production systems and forms of knowledge embedded within this territory.

 

The project originates from the long-standing relationship between olive cultivation and pastoralism, two activities that have shaped the same rural landscape for centuries. Sheep grazing among olive groves naturally control vegetation while providing wool, revealing the fibre as an inherent component of this agro-pastoral ecosystem.

 

The rug is crafted from deadstock wool sourced from cc-tapis’ own production. To ensure consistency during manufacturing, the company acquires additional yarn for each project, creating an archive of surplus wool that gradually accumulates over time. Combined with three undyed yarns of varying pile heights and calibrated thicknesses, this material composition creates subtle shifts in texture and density that evoke the layered complexity of the Mediterranean landscape while preserving the raw, organic character of the fibre.

 

Developed through cc-tapis’ Made in Milan programme using robotufting technology, the project explored different yarn compositions, pile heights and surface densities. Conceived as an open system rather than a fixed design, Uprooted Rug is available as a made-to-order piece and can be customised in size, shape and colour, allowing its underlying principles to respond to a wide range of architectural contexts.
